About Us

WHO IS THE SPIRIT OF TYLER

The Spirit of Tyler is an all-star cheerleading and dance program that began 17 years ago.   We have the most successful and winning program in the East Texas area with 132 national championships, 32 grand championship titles and hundreds of regional titles.  Students in our program join for various reasons.  Some join strickly to compete.  Others want to prepare themselves  to become school and college cheerleaders while others find being a member of Spirit of Tyler helps them maintain their skills in an effort to continue their school and college cheerleading status.  Many of our members have joined simply to develop friendships and become a part of a team.

Along with competing, we also perform at various community events.  We  have performed at various basketball half-time shows, the Rose, and Christmas Parades,  and Miseltoe & Magic to name a few.  Around the holidays, our cheerleaders do various community projects.  We believe these activities make our cheerleaders well-rounded and enable them to take pride in their East Texas community.

East Texas is well represented among our cheerleaders.  Our cheerleaders attend the following schools: Rice Elementary,  Jack Elementary, Caldwell Elementary, Hubbard Middle School, Robert E. Lee High School, All-Saints, Grace Community, Brook Hill School, St. Gregory,  Whitehouse Middle School,  Whitehouse High School, Bullard Elementary, Bullard Jr. High, Bullard High School,  Lindale High School, Rusk  Jr. High, Rusk High School, Van Elementary,  Sabine High School, Kilgore High School, Elkhart Middle School, Elkhart High School, West Palestine Middle School, Kilgore College,  Tyler Junior College, and Stephen F. Austin State University.

We have been featured in the American Cheerleader Magazine, Jr. American Cheerleader Magazine, Dance Spirit Magazine, and Tyler Today Magazine.  The 2005 team was the subject of  "The Road To Nationals", a documentary produced by Rush Productions.  Melinda McNatt, the coach/owner of the Spirit of Tyler has received choreography awards from many cheer and dance organizations including Cheer Power,  Americas Best, Cheer America, Power Dance, Jamfest, and United Cheer.  She has been a featured speaker at several coaches conferences.  She is safety certified, a certified judge and is also a member of  NSGA.  Mrs. McNatt cheered in high school and cheered in college at Southern Illinois University.

Spirit of Tyler believes that team building is just as important as competitive skills.  Team building activities include: traveling, camp, parties, games, banquet, community service,  and team building exercises for the first six weeks of our season.  Our older cheerleaders also serve as mentors to our younger ones.  Spirit of Tyler cheerleaders consider themselves as "family".  Our motto is YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IT TO ACHIEVE IT!

WHO CAN JOIN SPIRIT OF TYLER

Any girl or boy between the ages of 4 - 18 can join the Spirit of Tyler.  NO CHEERLEADING OR TUMBLING SKILLS ARE NECESSARY!  We have teams of all skill levels and we will give you the training that you need to become the best cheerleader that you can be.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I JOIN

Typically our season is 10-11 months long.  Tryouts are usually held at the end of March with actual practices beginning in April.  From April thru July our teams tumble twice a week, with some emphasis on basic cheer skills. Our squad practices will begin in August, and are normally once a week.   Beginning in October, we will have extra practices on some weekends in order to prepare for our competitions.  Our first competition is usually in December, and our last competition is in March.  During those months, we will attend 5 - 7 competitions depending on what team you are on.  These competitions are generally held in East Texas, Dallas, Shreveport, San Antonio, and Houston. A few expenses will be a cheerleading uniform,  camp, campwear, competition fees and spirit gifts.  There is an opportunity to use Fund raising as an option to help with these expenses.  You will also have the opportunity to join the Booster Club.  Our season wraps up with an award banquet. Spirit of Tyler has a team for everyone regardless of skill level.
